Top 10 Snow Shoveling Tips

By now you know snow removal is an expected and inevitable chore. A thick blanket of snow can make performing everyday functions extremely difficult. But with a few tips, a little practice and a lot patience, it’s amazing how efficient you can be with just your hands and an ordinary show shovel!

Shoveling Snow Winter

Don’t overdress.

Yes, you need to stay warm, but overdressing will have you sweating in no time. Dress in loose-fitting layers that you can peel off as you get into shoveling.

Stretch first.

Keep in mind, stretching makes all the difference. Stretch the same way a runner, mountain biker or athlete would: focus on your hamstrings, back and shoulders. Once you’ve begun shoveling, pace yourself! Start slowly.

Maintain proper posture.

We’ve all heard the saying, “lift with your legs, not your back.” Well, that applies to shoveling snow, too! Use your leg muscles as much as possible and push snow when you can. Keep your back straight, hold the shovel as close to your upper body as possible and don’t twist when throwing snow.

Don’t move snow twice.

Before you begin shoveling, decide where you’re going to dump the snow. Remember: don’t block snow that needs to be removed by piling it in a way that will force you to move it twice! This will only make the process more difficult and time-consuming.

Start with cars & surfaces.

To avoid moving snow twice, you’ll want to start by cleaning any cars and surfaces. Brush these areas first and then clear around, moving the snow into piles.

Move snow the shortest distance possible.

Choose a center point and move the snow from the center to the nearest edge. Form one large pile as you go.

Do the foreground, then the background.

Start by shoveling a strip clear along the perimeter of the area you’re shoveling, moving from the center to the edge. Push the snow into a cleared area and then lift and throw the snow out of the area.

Don’t use too much de-icer.

Once an area is clear, you’ll need to scatter some de-icer to keep it that way. Don’t go overboard! You’ll only need a thin layer. If you’re scattering by hand, throw salt, pellets or granules low along the ground so they fall into a thin, uniform layer.

Stretch when you’re done.

Once you’ve finished shoveling, stretch gently and use an ice pack to soothe inflamed muscles. Rest and remain hydrated.

Maintain your equipment.

Don’t forget to take care of your equipment! Once you’ve shoveled and rested, use a hammer to straighten out your shovel if it gets bent. You can also tighten loose handles by driving a large metal screw through the blade socket and into the handle.

5 Tips to Stay Healthy While Traveling This Winter

Did you know: 63% of travelers reported that they or a travel companion got sick while on vacation?

This winter, whether you’re planning a staycation down the street, a trip to a neighboring state, a cross-country road trip or a voyage across the globe, it’s important to make sure you’re feeling your best. An illness could not only ruin your trip, but it could cost you big bucks if you’re away from home.

So, what can you do to ensure you stay in optimal health while traveling this season?

Get vaccinated.

Before you leave for your trip, it’s best to look into scheduling an appointment with your doctor or a local clinic to ask what vaccines and tests you should get. Explain your travel plans, lifestyle, medical history and family health history.

If you’re needle shy and only end up getting one vaccine this winter, make it the influenza vaccination! The CDC recommends that everyone older than 6 months of age gets a flu shot, but make sure you allow enough time for antibodies to develop in your system—you won’t be protected until about two weeks after vaccination.

Exercise.

Doctors have found that exercise can improve your immune system by providing a boot to the cells in your body that are assigned to attack bacteria. As a result, people who exercise have stronger immune systems and are better equipped to take on bacteria. Prep for your trip by getting 75 minutes of physical activity per week (about 20 minutes four times a day) and don’t forget to stay consistent by taking the time to get in some heart-pumping routines during your travels.

Take Vitamin C.

Although you shouldn’t rely on Vitamin C alone, it can help ward off an illness in the early stages. In addition to a well-balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and filtered water, adding a vitamin supplement to your diet or dropping a teaspoon of liquid Vitamin C into your beverages can make a huge difference in your overall health. It’s recommended that you take 500 mg of Vitamin C per day.

Keep your hands clean.

While on the road (or in the sky), don’t forget to wash your hands! This is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Doctors recommend rubbing your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds—the amount of time it takes to hum “Happy Birthday” two times. Wash your hands before eating, touching your face or eyes and after coming in contact with germy surfaces.

Carry disinfecting wipes.

Cleaning and disinfecting are two different things. Cleaning removes germs from surfaces while disinfecting actually destroys them. It’s not necessary to disinfect every surface you touch, but it’s a great idea to carry a travel-size pack of wipes to clean door knobs and other areas that virtually all hands come in contact with.

This Season’s Top 4 Environmentally-Friendly Efforts to Encourage in Your Office

With the arrival of fall and winter comes cooler weather and, ultimately, more expenses and higher utility bills. But cutting down on costs this season isn’t as difficult as you’d think. In fact, there are some quick, simple steps you can take to encourage your coworkers and employees to be more efficient and eco-friendly.

Additionally, you can help improve your public standing by showing you care about things bigger than your success; a green business is something most employees want to work for and consumers want to support.

This season, encourage your employees to:

Carpool, bus, walk or bike to work instead of driving solo.

Finding other modes of transportation is obviously great for the environment, but it’s wallet-friendly, too! Carpooling can help you save on gas by splitting costs; walking or biking will allow you to take advantage of the weather and can help cut out the gas expense all together. No to mention, if you end up eliminating the use of your with alternative modes, you’ll end up saving money on vehicle maintenance!

Use a reusable cup or glass in the workplace.

Paper cups are a one-time-use expense you can definitely cut if your employees are willing to do their part. Cooler weather means more hot beverages, and a reusable container will help keep drinks warmer, longer! Ask your employees to bring in their own cup for drinks. This season, you might want to implement an incentive for doing so—such as discounted coffee and hot tea.

Wear warmer clothes so you can save on heating costs.

If employees are willing to dress appropriately, you could potentially turn down the thermostat a degree or two. If the weather doesn’t get too cold, you might even be able to open up the windows and let fresh air in. Send a memo explaining this idea and your reasons behind it. Ask employees to wear warmer clothes, but don’t let your building get too chilly. Your office should always be above 68°.

Embrace & take advantage of 100% post-consumer recycled products.

Buying and using recycled paper, cardboard and other commonly-used products can help close the gap between what you recycle and what you use. Encourage your employees to recycle—from paper to computer disks to glass. Not only will your company be doing its part for the environment by conserving landfill space and reducing pollution, but it’ll help you save money in the long run. It’s also a good idea to reuse any materials as possible around the office—this includes boxes, folders and scrap paper.

4 Quick & Simple Steps To Make Your Office Winter-Ready

The temperatures have finally started to drop, which means the winter weather isn’t far behind. As autumn quickly sets in, now is the perfect time to start thinking about getting your office ready for winter! Ensuring the overall comfort of your office and staff is easy if you prepare early.

Make sure your heating system is up-to-date.

When was the last time you used your heating system—or better yet, had maintenance on your heating system? Having your maintenance staff do a once-over to make sure your HVAC is ready for winter can make all the difference! A clean, properly inspected heating system will ensure you and your employees stay warm and comfortable all season long.

Keep an eye on the outdoors.

Are you ready for ice, snow and sleet? It’s imperative that you keep all of your parking lots and entryways safe for employees. The day after a snow storm isn’t really the ideal time to start worrying about snow supplies—stock up now! And keep in mind: we can help make your life a little easier with our stand-by snow removal services.

Prepare for winter colds and the flu.

Knock out germs by making sure you have plenty of tissues, hand sanitizer and disinfecting located throughout the office. Just a few quick preventative measures can help keep everyone in your office healthy and germ-free! You can even take an extra step by implementing a mandatory office-wide flu shot policy.

Keep your staff comfortable.

If you have several employees, you know how hard it is to keep everyone happy. Are you prepared for the wild swings in temperature that inevitably exist between your staff members? Once you crank up the heat, someone will be too warm while someone else is still cold! Keeping a wide range of desktop and freestanding fans and space heaters may be a smart solution to this issue, so make sure you have a few on hand. After all, happy employees are productive employees!

5 Ways To Keep Your Office Clean Between Professional Cleanings

A clean workspace can make a huge difference in the operation and efficiency of your business—not only does it make your employees more comfortable and respectful, but it adds to the overall professionalism of your office. In general, your office’s layout, décor, openness, organization and cleanliness can tell a lot about your business and its standards!

When you’re in need of professional cleaning services, you know you can turn to CFM Service Corp. But what can you do to ensure your workspace stays clean and organized in between professional cleanings?

Clean Workstation

Develop a filing system.

Without a doubt, having a place for everything ensures that clutter is kept to a minimum. Technology makes filing easier than ever: you can now scan paper documents to store electronically or keep your files on a server in the cloud. Not only will a filing system help de-clutter, but it will make documents more easily accessible so you can find the information you need when you need it.

Don’t eat at your desk.

Although it’s tempting to sit down at your desk and surf the web while you eat your lunch, eating at your desk isn’t a good idea! Taking your lunch break at your desk can be pretty messy and may appear unprofessional to clients. Not to mention, keeping your equipment free from crumbs and trash will ensure they remain in proper working order.

Tidy common areas.

Lobbies, restrooms and kitchens should always be kept tidy. Spaces that generate more traffic are bound to get a little messy and will need a little regular cleaning—don’t leave all of your cleaning to the professionals! Look at each space through the eyes of a guest in your building to make sure your first impression is a good one. Are there dishes in the kitchen sink? Discarded papers in the lobby? Are all of the trash cans in your bathroom full? Keeping up with small office chores can make a huge difference.

Make trash & recycling bins easily accessible.

Take a good look at your office: is there a paper recycling bin next to the copy machine and printer? A trash can in the kitchen? A plastics bin next to the vending machine? Appropriately placing bins for trash and recyclable products will guarantee less trash around the office.

Keep desks and counters clean.

Before your employees leave for the day, encourage them to do a quick wipe down of their own workspaces. Taking a minute or two to rid desks and countertops of dust, dirt and smudges will prevent your office from appearing dirty in between professional cleanings. Not to mention, it will help keep germs at bay!

5 Simple Ways To Cut Business Costs

When it comes to running your business, every penny counts. Even the smallest increase in revenue or reduction in expenses can have a significant impact on overall company profitability. Thankfully, to increase profits, a large-scale company overhaul isn’t necessary!

Cut Business Costs

1. Reduce supply expenses

Saving money on office supplies is easier than you think! Contact vendors to let them know you’re shopping around for prices and look outside of your pool of traditional vendors. Sometimes, vendors will run specials that can translate into BIG savings! Take a look at large discounter prices, as well. Stores like BJ’s, Amazon and Wal-Mart often beat traditional vendor pricing.

2. Make the most of your space

Analyzing your current use of physical space can help you get the most out of your office. Overflowing storage, too many supplies, piles of paper files and inefficient placement of furniture and equipment are all common space wasters. Consolidate or centralize the different functions or departments in your business and use space for dual purposes—a meeting room can easily double as a break or copy/fax room!

3. Maximize your employees’ skills

Every couple of months, it’s important to take time to assess the current usage of employee experience and skills. Giving responsibility to the employees with the most skills and efficiency will help increase productivity, ultimately boosting your bottom line. Don’t use expert salespeople for word processing or “numbers” people on design tasks. It’s often necessary for one person to be responsible for a variety of tasks, but consider assigning some of those tasks to better-performing employees.

4. Take advantage of technology

You can significantly reduce business costs by operating virtually whenever possible. Minimize travel expenses by hosting virtual meetings, saving in-person meetings for instances when it’s most beneficial. Converting paper documents into electronic files is also a great way to save money!

5. Focus on quality

Whether your focus is a product or service, make sure quality is always in the forefront of your employees’ minds. Happy, satisfied customers increase sales through referrals and repeat purchases! A high-quality product or service and a solid reputation often means you can charge more, ultimately leading to higher revenue and an increased bottom line.

7 Tips for Staying Healthy in the Workplace

Tips to a Healthy Workplace

Germs and bacteria can show up in some pretty unexpected places. Whether you realize it or not, you’re exposed to millions each and every day—and the workplace is no exception!

If you pay close attention, there always seems to be someone at work with a cough, runny nose or the dreaded stomach virus. You might also notice that these people have higher absentee rates!

Despite the seemingly incessant nature of germs and bacteria, there are a handful of things you can do to make sure you stay healthy in the workplace.

1. Stay hydrated.

Most people are unaware of this, but your chance of getting sick increases if you’re dehydrated. Make sure that you drink at least 64 ounces (8 cups) of water every single day to keep your hydration levels where they need to be.

2. Wash your hands.

Your hands come into contact with thousands of things everyday—from computer keyboards and telephones to door knobs and coffee pots! Picking up germs on your hands is extremely easy, so make sure you’ve instilled the habit of washing your hands frequently. For bonus points, use anti-bacterial soap!

3. Eat well.

Diets play a huge role in your overall health and quality of life. Nourishing your body with foods rich in vitamins and minerals can make all the difference in your day-to-day wellness! Eating an abundance of whole, organic foods will help your body naturally fend off infections and illnesses. Instead of grabbing a muffin or that 2 o’ clock cup of coffee, choose foods that are rich in vitamin C: oranges, bell peppers, spinach, kale, strawberries and broccoli will do the trick.

4. Keep tissues available.

Sneezing spreads airborne germs, so always be sure to cover your mouth or sneeze into your elbow! Having a tissue handy is ideal, as well as keeping a little bottle of anti-bacterial gel handy to ensure your hands are germ-free at all times.

5. Drink herbal tea.

Did you know: herbal tea will help your immune system fight off germs and viruses? Herbal tea is a great healthy alternative to water—but make sure you’re still getting your daily 64 ounces of H2O.

6. Exercise often.

Daily exercise is more important than you think! Not only does exercise help you build cardio strength, but it also boosts your immunity. Get your body moving! Even something as effortless as a 20 minute walk can help you fight off illness.

7. Call in sick.

If you’re really sick, buck up and let your employer know! Nobody wants to lose a day of pay, but if you truly aren’t feeling well, it’s better to stay home. By going into work, you could potentially spread whatever you have to coworkers or, even worse, push yourself, only making you more sick!

3 Reasons You Need a Commercial Cleaning Service

First impressions count.

The appearance of your work environment is the very first thing your clients, suppliers and prospective employees see when they enter your office building. The layout, décor, openness, organization and cleanliness of your work space can tell a lot about your business and its standards.

Would you want to work for or with a company that had a dirty, disorganized office?

Clean work spaces provide a safe, productive and enjoyable work experience for both you and your staff, and hiring a commercial cleaning company can quickly solve the everyday dilemma of who will get what done and when. Leave the cleaning to the pros!

Increase the Happiness & Productivity of Employees

Employees need to enjoy their work environment. No one wants to work in a dirty, dusty, unorganized, cramped place! This can cause employee frustration, and frustrated employees are more likely to perform less efficiently. Not to mention, a dirty work environment is unhealthy!

Show your employees you care about them and set standards by providing a pristine workspace. If you put effort into making sure your office is clean, your employees are more likely to do their part to help by keeping their own work areas clean, as well.

Build Client Trust

People are instinctually drawn to clean, organized and open work environments.

An office that is full of dirt, dust and misplaced documents will lead your current and potential clients to believe that you don’t know how to efficiently operate a business. Because your clients are investing their money into your company, you should show respect and dedication to your work by ensuring operational efficiency through a clean, organized workspace.

Again, set standards for your company through cleanliness! This will give potential clients an idea of what they should expect when choosing your product or services, increasing their likelihood to work with you.

Get the Most for Your Money

Just as you have expertise in your field and employees with particular skills, commercial cleaners are dedicated to making sure buildings are as clean as possible.

By outsourcing a commercial cleaning service, you’re hiring people that specialize in cleaning—they know exactly what to clean, when to clean and how to clean, and have the proper products and skills to get the job done in a timely and efficient manner.

Ensure a pristine clean every time by leaving the cleaning to us!

How to Reduce Your Summer Energy Bills in 5 Simple Steps

As summer temperatures rise, it’s not uncommon for utility bills to do the same.

Cutting down on costs by investing some time into making your business operations more efficient and eco-friendly definitely has its perks—saving on your energy bills can allow you to put money toward helping your business grow. Additionally, you can help improve your public standing by showing you care about things bigger than just your personal success; most consumers want to support green businesses.

So, what can you do to help decrease the amount of money you’re spending on your company’s energy bills? It’s simple! Even the smallest changes can have you reaping benefits in no time.

Change lighting

Switching from traditional incandescent light bulbs to energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs can result in savings that will add up over time. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, CFL bulbs use 75 percent less energy and can save you about $30 in energy costs over the life of just one bulb.

Why? CFL bulbs use at least two-thirds less energy than standard bulbs, but provide the same amount of light. Not to mention, they last up to 10 times longer! Because they generate about 70 percent less heat, CFLs are safer to operate, and switching can reduce the energy costs associated with cooling your office.

Clean filters

In order for your air conditioning system to run as efficiently and inexpensively as possible, it’s imperative that you clean your filters regularly!

Dirty filters can significantly block airflow, ultimately reducing your system’s efficiency. If your normal airflow is obstructed, air will bypass the filter and may carry dirt directly into the system’s evaporator coil and impair the coil’s heat-absorbing capacity. Cleaning your filter can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by up to 15 percent in the warmer months.

For central air conditioners, filters are generally located along the return duct’s length while room air conditioners have filters mounted into the grills. It’s important to inspect your filter to make sure it fits properly. Whether you have a reusable or disposable filter, clean or replace your system’s filters once a month.

Insulate

Just as insulation keeps your building warm in the winter, it can help keep your office cool during the summer. By keeping outdoor heat from traveling through poor insulation and into cooler indoor spaces, you can potentially reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 20 percent, according to Energy Star.

If you’re going to insulate in just one place, look up. If you have an attic in your building, it’s important to keep in mind that attic temperatures can rise up to 140° or higher in the summer. Proper insulation can stop that heat from radiating downward and into your office.

Most insulation companies can complete an energy audit to help identify the efficiency of your current insulation. Take time to discuss your options with your contractor to decide what type of insulation is best suited for your building—spray foam, blown cellulose or batted insulation.

Shade windows

Unlike proper insulation, shades and blinds won’t actually stop hot air from flowing into your building, but they, too, can play a huge role in saving energy!

Interior blinds and drapes or curtains can reduce heat gain. Although their effectiveness varies greatly depending on the type of fabric or material, color and backing, properly shaded windows can reduce heat gain by approximately 45 percent. On hot days, close blinds or curtains over windows that receive direct sunlight and save!

Turn off lights and electronics

How many times have you walked past the conference or break room only to see the lights blazing and no one in there? Take a second to turn off the lights in rooms that aren’t in use and encourage your employees to do the same. Don’t forget to turn off lights office-wide when you leave for the day, so you’re not wasting money by paying for electricity that you’re not using.

Likewise, powering off computers at night or when you leave for the day is another easy way to save energy in the office. Not many people are aware of how much energy a computer consumes when it’s turned on, let alone left on all day and night, not to mention the extra heat it generates into your building!

How to Prepare Your Business for Hurricane Season

The start of hurricane seasons tends to start a panic for a lot of business owners along the US coast line. And while Mother Nature often acts as a reminder for creating business continuity plans, it’s the downtime when businesses should be preparing the most.

With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration saying there’s a 70 percent likelihood of 13 to 20 named storms this hurricane season — with the possibility of seven to 11 becoming hurricanes – the time to prepare your business the most is when nothing is happening.

Of small businesses that close because of a disaster, at least one in four will not reopen. And many small business owners don’t feel they have the time or money to create a continuity plan. However, there are free tools available online and it’s nest to to prepare in stages.

First, a business owner should take two weeks to learn the company’s risks — natural perils and what’s located around it. Is the business near railroad tracks or a manufacturer that works with possibly explosive chemicals? Then the business owner should take another two weeks to meet with employees and learn about the company’s operations and what functions would need to be recovered immediately. In addition, the company should know how to contact its employees, vendors, suppliers and key customers. Data should be backed up, too.

Not being prepared can be catastrophic. For instance, a small business could close for days — or permanently — if its server crashes and isn’t backed up. It’s recommended to have all company information backed up onsite and in the cloud. The cloud allows users to access content traditionally stored on a desktop computer from anywhere.
At the bare minimum, have sensitive documents such as financial records backed up. But back up the entire server, including the operating system, so it can be up and running within a few hours.

People don’t like to think about hurricane protection until the season is upon them. Companies which provide hurricane protection products ranging from storm panels to impact doors and windows tend to be backed up about five to six weeks for customers wanting shutters and six to eight weeks for windows or sliding glass doors as soon as hurricane season hits.

In the face of a natural disaster, business owners should also consider their insurance. Business owners need to review their policies annually and make sure these policies still fit their needs. For instance, maybe a company invested in new equipment or renovated their property. These additions should be matched up to insurance policies.
And if a business relocated, the owner should check if it’s in a flood zone. Companies that rent can also buy flood insurance that protects content inside the building — the landlord will be responsible for the building itself.

In addition, look at business interruption coverage, which will help a business relocate and continue operating if its building is physically damaged, and contingent business interruption coverage, which can help a business if its major supplier or supply chain is damaged by the disaster. It’s the smart thing to do if you want to stay in business after a natural disaster.

For more information about preparing your business for a natural disaster and which maintenance practices are best for your business, call CFM today for a free consultation.
